WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-Ga.) today applauded President Donald J. Trump’s declaration of a Nationwide Public Health Emergency to address the opioids crisis.
“I am very glad President Trump made this declaration and it was an honor to join him at the White House today,” said Carter. “Americans are dying every day from an opioid overdose and the situation is only getting worse. While we have been working to address this issue in Congress, I believe this declaration will elevate this to a nationwide discussion. This is absolutely a health emergency and it should be considered one.”
Carter and his colleagues on the House Energy and Commerce Committee have been working diligently to combat the opioid emergency. The Committee has launched a series of investigations on different aspects of this crisis including alleged pill dumping, patient brokering, state level responses, and the synthetic opioid fentanyl. The Committee also held a hearing yesterday to discuss the federal response to this epidemic.
“As a lifelong pharmacist, I have seen opioid addiction end careers and ruin lives,” Carter said. “However, at the same time, I have seen firsthand how vital these medications are for those who truly need them. As a pharmacist, I viewed addressing prescription drug abuse as part of my professional duty and I have continued this work in the United States House of Representatives. I am committed to continued work with President Trump and the entire administration to combat this epidemic.”
