Chattahoochee Tech Honors Cobb County Couple for 15 Years of Helping Students through Memorial Golf Tournament

(Acworth, Ga. – Oct. 9, 2018) Chattahoochee Technical College honored Alan and Claire Peterson, of Cobb County, as the college’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year on Monday, Oct. 8, at the 15th annual Mike Peterson Memorial Golf Tournament to thank them for their many years of dedicated service in raising over $146,000 through this annual event to benefit Chattahoochee Tech students.

As a token of the college’s appreciation, Chattahoochee Technical College President Dr. Ron Newcomb presented the Petersons with a glass sculpture at Cartersville Country Club, the site of this year’s tournament. The Petersons have organized a memorial golf tournament every fall since 2003 to celebrate the life of their son, Mike Peterson, an automotive enthusiast who passed away in 2002. All proceeds from the memorial golf tournaments have been donated to the Chattahoochee Tech Foundation in order to fund tool sets, each worth thousands of dollars, for Chattahoochee Technical College students in the Automotive Technology, Diesel Equipment Technology and Automotive Collision Repair programs.

“Alan and Claire Peterson’s steadfast commitment for so many years has been truly inspiring,” said Dr. Newcomb. “We are sincerely grateful for their impressive work to make a difference in the lives of Chattahoochee Tech students. Their support and dedication has succeeded in changing lives.”

The Chattahoochee Tech Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that supports the college by working diligently to help make higher education an affordable reality for students at Chattahoochee Technical College.

Deal: Floor & Decor to Create 500 Jobs in Cobb County

Gov. Nathan Deal today announced that Floor & Decor, a multichannel specialty retailer of hard surface flooring and related accessories, will create 500 jobs over five years in the expansion and relocation of its headquarters in Atlanta. New jobs will include administrative and customer service positions.

“Floor & Decor’s headquarters expansion highlights how companies that call Georgia home find success for continued growth here in the No. 1 state for business,” said Deal. “Georgia is home to many of the nation’s flooring industry leaders who thrive here thanks to our skilled workforce, expansive logistics infrastructure and close proximity to the Southeastern market. Companies like Floor & Decor are a driving force in our state’s economy, as they invest in our communities and create quality jobs for Georgians. Our low-tax, business-friendly economic environment will continue to help Floor & Decor flourish well into the future.”

Floor & Decor operates 95 warehouse-format stores in 26 states, including seven in Georgia. In February, the company opened a state-of-the-art 1.4 million-square-foot distribution center outside of Savannah, which employs over 100 people.

Deal: thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas Business Unit to Create More Than 650 Jobs in Cobb County

Gov. Nathan Deal today announced that thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas Business Unit, one of the leading building transportation companies in North America and a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp AG, will create more than 650 new jobs and invest more than $200 million in its new headquarters and innovation complex in Cobb County. Upon completion, the new complex will include three facilities anchored by a state-of-the-art, 420-foot-tall elevator qualification and test tower, the tallest of its kind in the nation.

 “Georgia’s economic environment provides a strong foundation for companies operating in today’s high-demand industries, from technology to transportation,” said Deal. “As a global leader in building transportation, thyssenkrupp will enjoy the resources of the No. 1 state in which to do business by locating its new headquarters in Cobb County. Our world-class university and technical college systems will provide thyssenkrupp access to a deep talent pool and our technology infrastructure will provide a suitable home for future growth. New jobs will include positions in IT, engineering, administration and training. Completion of the complex is expected by early 2022.

The project will include a tower to test thyssenkrupp’s products including the TWIN and MULTI elevator systems. North America’s first TWIN elevator system, which features two cars arranged on top of each other operating independently in a single hoistway, is being installed in the CODA Building at Tech Square with completion expected in 2019.

The new facility is also expected to generate thousands of visitors annually for product showcasing and training.
